He claims he was wrongly accused of running an unauthorized checkpoint and taking D4,000 from a passenger.

Danso explained that his troubles began during his nearly two-year tenure at the Kiang Kwinella station. One day, he received a call from his Regional Sergeant Major (RSM), Amadou Touray, who informed him that rumors were spreading on social media about him.

At the time, Danso was off duty and relaxing at home when Touray reached out to him. He was told that the Immigration Department had received reports claiming he had set up an illegal checkpoint at Sibanor and had collected D4, 000 from a driver.

Danso was baffled and questioned how he could have left his post in Kiang Kwinella to create an unauthorized checkpoint in Sibanor, given the considerable distance between the two places.

“I asked him how it was even possible for me to abandon my guard post at Kiang Kwinella and travel all the way to Sibanor to set up an illegal checkpoint. Plus, how could I do that with other officers officially on duty at the Sibanor checkpoint?” Danso recalled.

He urged Touray to look into the allegations carefully before taking any action against him.

However, Danso claimed that Touray told him a charge sheet had already been prepared, but he refused to let Danso see it or understand the specific allegations against him.

Danso insisted on viewing the charge sheet, wanting clarity on the exact offense he was accused of committing. He further explained that Touray later informed him that senior officials at GID had received orders from Deputy Operations Commander Hatab Bojang to arrest him.

He went on to explain that Touray later told him that senior officials from the GID had received orders from Deputy Operations Commander Hatab Bojang to arrest him and bring him to the department’s headquarters in Banjul.

Danso mentioned that Touray eventually handed him the charge sheet, which accused him of unlawfully leaving his jurisdiction and entering another one.

“After I read the charge sheet, I told them I wasn’t guilty of what they were claiming. I hadn’t done anything wrong that would justify this kind of treatment,” he stated.

Photo: Alleged termination letter bearing not the signature of GID, MD

Arrest and alleged denial of access to his pregnant wife

Danso also claimed that after his arrest, he begged the officers to let him see his wife, who was heavily pregnant and the only one at home with him.

He said his plea fell on deaf ears as the officers took him toward the Immigration Department’s headquarters in Banjul.

When they reached Farato, he asked the officers if he could give some money to his wife before they continued on their way.

Danso alleged that he seized the chance to pass her the money and told her to stay inside the house while he left with the officers.

He mentioned that shortly after, a group of immigration officers showed up at his home looking for him, seemingly intending to arrest him again.

According to him, his landlord called to inform him about the officers’ arrival, but he advised the landlord to stay out of it, saying he would take care of the situation himself.

Danso said he eventually reported to the Immigration Department’s headquarters in Banjul the next day.

Alleged confrontation with Deputy Operations Commander

He further shared that Hamadi Jammeh, the Commissioner of the West Coast Region, also reached out to him and asked him to come to his office in Banjulunding before heading to the department’s headquarters in Banjul together.

Once they arrived, Danso said they ran into Deputy Operations Commander Hatab Bojang, who allegedly told him directly that he intended to dismiss him from The Gambia Immigration Department.

“He stood up right away and said, “I am going to dismiss you from The Gambia Immigration Department,” Danso remembered.

He mentioned that Jammeh tried to step in, urging Bojang to take a step back and conduct a proper investigation before making any decisions.

However, Danso claimed that Bojang ignored Jammeh’s counsel, despite his higher rank, and stuck to his guns.

Ombudsman’s intervention

Danso later decided to bring his case to the Office of the Ombudsman, which he claims ruled in his favor and instructed the Immigration Department to reinstate him.

He alleged that the Ombudsman deemed his dismissal unlawful, especially since the termination letter hadn’t been signed by the Director General of the Immigration Department.

“The Ombudsman ruled that my dismissal was unlawful and directed the Immigration Department to reinstate me. One of the key issues was that my termination letter lacked the Director General’s signature,” Danso stated.

His story raises important questions about the circumstances of his dismissal, the processes followed in addressing the allegations against him, and how well the disciplinary procedures within the Immigration Department were adhered to.

As we went to press, we were unable to get in touch with the Office of the Ombudsman, the Personnel Management Office (PMO), or the Gambia Immigration Department (GID).

By: Ousman A.
